AT&T to acquire BellSouth! Return of the Bell System?
After writing a short article about Mega Telcos, looks like further consolidation is happening. Just recently SBC+AT&T has agreed to buy BellSouth. So here is an update on the new world order:
SBC = SBC+BellSouth (Wireline Voice), AT&T (Long Distance Voice), AT&T (Internet), Cingular (Mobile), SBC-Yahoo (TV)
Verizon = Verizon (Wireline Voice), MCI (Long Distance Voice), MCI (Internet), Verizon (Mobile)
If this deals passes regulators SBC+AT&T will now have four of the seven Baby Bells (BellSouth, Southwestern Bell Corporation, Pacific Telesis and Ameritech). Verizon is already composed of two of the seven Baby Bells (NYNEX and Bell Atlantic). So who is going to buy Qwest (with former Baby Bell US West)? Maybe Sprint-Nextel should consider it. Are we moving closer to a single bell system?
