Amazon S3 Launched, Google Drive Step Aside

Amazon just released their long awaited Simple Storage Service (S3) Web Service.

Amazon S3 provides a simple web services interface that can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web. It gives any developer access to the same highly scalable, reliable, fast, inexpensive data storage infrastructure that Amazon uses to run its own global network of web sites. The service aims to maximize benefits of scale and to pass those benefits on to developers.

Well, it is not a free service. But at 0.15 per GB per month, 1000 GB would translate to only $150. This is not bad at all. The nice thing about this service is that it provides a SOAP or REST-like API for developers wanting to provide storage services.

Is the vision of the Grid slowly becoming a reality? Will Google be able to release Google Drive and catch-up?

There is this new article about Google being the new Kryptonite. How can they possibly hope to obtain world domination?

[…] Online storage is a very nice feature add as well. They haven’t built this themselves. Instead they are using the box.net API on the back end. Goowy is giving every user 1 GB of free storage, with 5 GB for $5/month coming soon. Given the new pricing benchmarks set by Amazon recently, I expect these prices to come down over time. Goowy storage has a straightforward uploading tool, and files can be tagged and set to private, public or shared. […]
