Ateneo Team is among the best Java programmers in the World

Here is a write-up by Dr. Rafael Saldana on April 12, 2006 from San Antonio, Texas, USA. Dr. Saldana is accompanying the Ateneo de Manila team in the ICPC World Finals:

The Ateneo Team “Linden BoyZ” bagged 6th place in the 2006 World Finals of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Java Challenge held April 11 in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

The Ateneo contingent to the ACM ICPC consists of students Allan Espinosa, Mark Punzalan, Christopher Rigor, and faculty members Dr. Pablo Manalastas and Dr. John Paul Vergara as coaches, and Dr. Rafael Saldana as Regional Contest Director for Asia-Manila.

The first place in the ICPC Java Challenge went to KTH - Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden). The Ateneo team Linden BoyZ beat the other top universities participating in the Java Challenge portion of the 2006 ACM ICPC World Finals including Massachussets Institute of Technology (MIT), California Institute of Technology (CIT), and Princeton University.

The most talented students of computing, from all corners of the world, came to San Antonio, Texas for the 30th annual World Finals of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) International Collegiate Programming Contest, April 9-13, 2006. The ICPC is the world’s most prestigious university competition in computing sciences and engineering.

More than 5,600 teams representing 1,733 universities from 84 countries on 6 continents participated in regional contests held from October to December 2005. The top 83 teams have qualified for positions at the 2006 ACM-ICPC World Finals championships.

Ateneo de Manila University is the only university from the Philippines that have qualified to the World Finals in 30-year history of the ACM ICPC. In fact, Ateneo de Manila University has qualified to the World finals two years in a row: 2005 (held in Shanghai, China) and 2006 (held in San Antonio, Texas, USA).

I hope that this feat serves as an inspiration to other potential computer science students to participate in this competition. Placing 6th is no small feat besting the other top schools in the World. Congratulations to the Ateneo Team and good work! Yes, the Filipino Can!
