Oracle Linux?
A Slashdot posting lead me to an article from Reuters about Oracle planning to enter the operating system business by buying a Linux vendor.
It said Ellison told the newspaper that Oracle wanted to sell a full range of software that, like Microsoft, included both operating system and applications.
“I’d like to have a complete stack,” Ellison was quoted as saying.
Is this just another Linux distribution? Well, it may seem like it at first. However, the key item to note here is that Oracle will be able to leverage on its database market strengths and have customers deploy a bundled Oracle on Linux as their default option. This is possible since most customers do not really care about the operating system underneath but the database software. Oracle is actually doing this now already. However, buying an existing strong Linux distribution can further improve the coopling between the products.
