Yahoo Go? Head on with TiVO and Windows Media Center
Yahoo takes a crack at the digital video recorder (VCR) space by releasing Yahoo Go TV (Beta). Does this attempt to compete with the likes of TiVO and Microsoft Media Center? Techcrunch has a short article (with pictures) about it.
Yahoo launched Yahoo Go TV today, a DVR and general Microsoft Media Center competitor based on the recently acquired Meedio technology.
The feature list is comprehensive: Use Yahoo Go to manage photos, search Yahoo videos, watch stored movies on your hard drive, listen to music and manage television shows via a full DVR (like Tivo or Microsoft Media Center). Yahoo Go is only available for Windows machines.
The first thing to note is that it is copying the classic TiVO look (Note the TV-friendly screen resolution and form factor). I believe this is a good move as the TiVO interface is very user-friendly and does not assume computer interface bias (Concepts like double click, click and drag and many others). It is good that Yahoo avoided the temptation to make it like a computer application. Of course, it is unfortunate that us Linux and Mac users can’t benefit from this beta
It might have been better if they made this an Web 2.0 application and stored all recorded videos online. This way they can make it a video/TV version of flckr.
