iMac Education Edition

I just read this article from Macsimum News about Apple’s recently release of a $899 iMac specifically catered to educational institutions (eMac). I am pretty excited with this release since this allows us to procure low cost Apple Computers.

Apple has introduced a US$899 configuration of the 17-inch iMac designed specifically for education customers featuring a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor… Featuring a 17-inch widescreen LCD display, the iMac for education includes a Combo drive for burning CDs and reading DVDs, 512MB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory expandable up to 2GB and hard drive storage capacity up to 160GB. Every iMac also includes a built-in iSight video camera, built-in 10/100/1000 BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed networking, built-in AirPort Extreme 802.11g WiFi for up to 54Mbps wireless networking, a total of five USB ports (three USB 2.0) and two FireWire 400 ports.

This is still not as cheap as the currently available clone computers. Worst case, the retail price in the Philippines might be 10-30% more due to importation costs. However, this model comes pretty loaded with an LCD displace, DVD-ROM/CD-RW, built-in Ethernet and WiFi, and lots of firewire and USB ports. These bells and whistles, together with a 17-in LCD screen, make the eMac is an ideal multimedia workstation for teaching digital media classes. Since, this sucker has WiFi built, it is easier to these machines to a network. Just purchase a WiFi router for that classroom. Hello MacLab! No mess, no fuss, no hassle.
