MotoRAZR: Simply Disruptive!

In another case of disruptive technology at work, the Motorola RAZR has been a resounding success selling over 50,000,000 units. Yes, that is 50 million units of Motorola RAZR version 3.

However, I don’t quite understand this statement from the Motorola Website:

The RAZR is Motorola’s design philosophy made real: technology, design, and exceptional communication in one,” said Ron Garriques, president, Mobile Devices, Motorola. “The development was a journey we took to find and express the soul of our company. This milestone proves Motorola’s philosophy of engaging consumers and keeping them wanting more.

With only 5.5 megabytes of non-expandable memory, low resolution TFT screen, no MP3 player (only for ring tones), no FM radio and crappy address book (weak PIM functionality that can’t store postal addresses and other additional information?), the RAZR is sorely lacking in terms of “technological” features. However, the RAZR is a solid case of disruptive technology at work. Instead of following the trend of putting more memory, more devices, better PIM features and better “advanced” functionality (process called incremental innovation), Motorola decided to just around and fulfill another need (disruptive innovation). The Look! The RAZR was designed from the start to be a “really cool” phone. With its ultra-slim form factor, chemically-etched keyboard and metallic finish in cool color, the RAZR is definitely the most fashionable mobile phone in the market. It definitely fulfills a need. The need to be cool. Simply disruptive!
