On Campus Cellular Technology
Emily of Textually.org has this nice blog about the use of Cellular Phones with tracing functionality on Campus.
For freshmen at New Jersey’s Montclair State University, the new freedoms that presumably came with college age included a mandatory cell phone with which the school could pinpoint their whereabouts on or off campus.
Of course, that is not all that is mentioned. Here are some of the other interesting suggestions for the use of mobile phone technology:
- Replacement for existing telephone port services in dormitories. Well, this might not be commonplace here since most dormitories don’t lease phone ports and most students already have mobile phones.
- Real-time alerts and information from the university. This is one of the most obvious VAS applications that can be offered. At least, subscription services to inform students of school annoucements like class suspension, course updates and others.
- Mobile Enlistment and Enrollment. Now this would be a nice application. Allowing students to, at least, view the possible class schedules and slots available would definitely be useful.
- Learn about specials at campus restaurants. Among many other things even annoucements such as school productions and events. Each organization can have its own keyword and subscription service.
- Track the location of school shuttle buses. This might be an interesting VAS application. This is definitely an interesting use of LBS and maybe even GPS technology. Also a good number of parents give their children (or at least their yayas) mobile phones.
There are definitely more mobile VAS applications that can be introduced. Not all of them will probably click. Since there are a lot possible ideas, there are probably some that will.
