US Mobile Network Operator Pass FEMA Trials

Mobilecrunch has this feature on Einstein Wireless together with Cellcast Pass FEMA Pilot Program Trials. I find this particularly interesting because I believe that the ability to broadcast messages during times of emergencies is a very important service that must be provided by these mobile network operators. In times of disasters, it is typically the mobile phone network that survives and is still able to serve the public. This is particularly true in current cases, like the Indonesian Tsunami and Israeli-Lebanese Conflict.

Einstein Wireless has become the first US company to successfully demonstrate their ability to broadcast emergency alerts based upon the FEMA Pilot Program guidelines. Capable of transmitting emergency alerts across the state of Wisconsin, Einstein utilized CellCast Communications equipment and technology to support the broadcast and appears to have demonstrated that it is feasible to broadcast emergency alerts related to life-threatening events including terrorist activites, weather events, fires, chemical spills/explosions or other dangerous situations.

What is strange is that the larger players are not getting into this yet. What are they waiting for? This should not be hard to develop. Maybe operators here in the Philippines might want to consider this public service? It is likely they would only implement this if it were mandated by government.
