My Places of Work
Different people have different places of work. Most people have just one or two. Some people have much more. I have decided to dedicate this blog entry to the areas where my creative juices typically flow and are consumed immediately. The list is sorted according to the place I spend more time working.
- The Office. I currently have a nice office in Makati City that is just enough for my work requirements. It is a pretty spare desk with a lot of papers and books scattered on top of. I purpose leave it scatter because “it adds character to my desk”. Statement first used by my undergraduate Physics teachers). I will soon be moving to a new area in the office that will soon have a Window view
So I spend most of my working day here. I like the office environment we have here because it is very collegial and open. My only beef is the missing air conditioning after 5 o’clock in the afternoon. - Home. Home is a place for family, rest and recreation. The problem with me is that I disturbingly find work recreational. Therefore, I do spend a bit of time at home doing a few things that are work related. Work here might not necessary tie directly into one of my current projects or academic endeavors. It can possibility be just about checking out new tools (particularly new open source software).
- School. Being a part-time teacher and researcher, I do spend a good deal of time at School. I also like the open and collegial environment here. However, because of the benefits of modern information technology, I can advise my students and do most of my research over the Internet. Being able to communicate efficiently over a remote media definitely reduces the time I have to be physically in School. This does, however, eat into a significant amount of my free time. But, no bother here. I find thesis advising and academic research enjoyable too.
- Any Other Place. Then, the remainder of my work time is spend in any other place. This can be in client premises, customer sites and random coffee shops about. Being able to bring my work around does have its benefits. I can setup and office instantly in any place with a decent seat, table and Internet connection. The Internet Connection requirement can even be modified to decent GPRS/EDGE/3G-PS/HSDPA connectivity. This is because I can use my mobile phone to provide Internet connectivity.
So, there they are. My places of work. What are your places of work?

Home-Office. Since I’m self-employed and working on project-based jobs, I can work at the comfort of my home-office.
I do, however, limit work-related books and computers into one room of the house to make sure that work-induced stress doesn’t affect the other areas of my sanctuary.
Ateneo. Ateneo’s Loyola Schools of Theology Cafeteria balcony offers a good view of Marikina / Antipolo / Rizal. It’s quiet and has tables suitable for group meetings. However, if the tables are occupied, you can’t go wrong with the air-conditioned Rizal library.
Tables. Just like your “Any Other Place,” as long as I have access to a decent table for my laptop. In which case, I prefer malls. The hustle and bustle provides excellent breaks in between intense bouts of concentration. Establishments with power outlets get a bonus!

I do agree that the LST Cafeteria balcony does have a spectacular view of Marikina. Abeit, it is just a bit too far for my tastes. Of course, I do prefer air conditioning

Ah yes … the extension office. Again, productivity is severly limited but then again work gets done. It does have the basic requirements: air conditioning, good seats, good table and free Internet.
