Coming of Age: Voice-over-IP

The battle is won. Voice-over-IP is here to stay. With all major PBX vendors (namely Avaya, Nortel, Siemens and Ericsson) and network equipment makers (namely Cisco, Huawei, UTS) offering voice-over-IP based solutions to the enterprise market. It is pretty clear that the world is ditching traditional RJ-11 PSTN-like telephone systems for voice-over-IP (over RJ-45 UTP) across the enterprises.

Sampling of Big Ticket VoIP news:

  • Bank of America rolls out 180,000 VoIP phones. BA replaces all their traditional PBXs and telephone with their VoIP counterparts using primarily Cisco gear.
  • Hutchison 3 rolls-out Skype for the Mobile. This is under their X-Series campaign that includes other interesting Internet-realm properties. Skype may not be compliant with Voice-over-IP standards but it is a form of Voice-over-IP. Will this signal the move of VoIP into the mobile space?
  • 3G IMS is based on SIP. Using SIP is a sure sign that IMS is moving towards packetization the VoIP-way.

Looks like VoIP has a secure future!
