Norwegians are the world’s most avid texters?

According to this article from textually.org. it says that Norwegians are the world’s most avid texters with 1,000 SMS messages sent in 2006 (4.6 billion SMS messages for the entire year).

According to Aftenposten, Norwegians are the most enthusiastic users of text messaging in the world, sending 1,000 SMS per person in 2006 - or three message per day. “Although the final figures for 2006 are not quite ready, it is likely that Norwegians set a new record, sending well over 4.5 billion SMS last year - or roughly 1,000 per person….

Telenor’s main competitor NetCom is also compiling their final figures for 2006, but can confirm that their customers average over 100 SMS each per month. Mobile phone use is extremely high in Scandinavia, but neighboring Sweden does not share Norway’s SMS dependency, with only an average of 30 SMS per month sent.

1,000 SMS messages per person per year? Who are they kidding? One provider in the Philippines alone moves about one (1) billion SMS messages a day on the average (this is just one provider). With a subscriber based of approximately 20 million subscribers, this easily translates to 50 SMS messages a day per Filipino. Therefore, it would be safe to assume that each Filipino sends over 15,000 SMS message per year on the average. Heck, I send over 300 message a month. That is about 3,600 SMS message per year and I am a below average SMS user.
