Funambol: Open Source Push Email Matures?

The guys at Funambol are making a big announcement at 3GSMA in Barcelona. This PR article from Yahoo mentions that they will be demonstrating the world’s first open source mobile email, contacts and calendaring solution.

Funambol, the mobile open source software company, today announced it will preview its new mobile email portal for consumers at 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, February 12 - 15, 2007. The company will also show the world’s first open source Java mobile email client for mass market phones and how its software powers the email, contacts and calendars for the popular OpenMoko mobile Linux platform.

For those of you who are not familiar with Funambol, this is the company that had a solution formerly known as sync4j (of course, now it is called funambol). They have gone beyond synchronization and generalized their product into a full mobility solution. OpenMoko, on the other hand, is the open source stack that runs on the hackable FIC linux phones I talked about a while back. It would be interesting to see if they can really demonstrate a usable product. Should RIM be worried? Well maybe not yet as Funambol does not have the latest and the greatest released to the community side of their project … yet.
