PLDT Mobile Operators Hit 25M Subscribers

Looks like the Philippine mobile market is heathier than ever. Here is an article confirming that PLDT-owned mobile operators Smart and Piltel have reach 25 million subscribers.

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) had a record 25 million mobile phone subscribers at the end of 2006, equivalent to about a 58 percent share of the local market, unit Smart Communications Inc. said.

Cellular phone service providers Smart and Pilipino Telephone Corp. (Piltel) had a total of 22.7 million subscribers in September of last year and 20.4 million at the end of 2005. Of the 25 million users, 17.6 million were subscribers of Smart while 7.4 million were users of Piltel’s Talk ‘N Text brand.

This accounts for nearly five (5) million in new mobile subscribers. This is a spectacular amount of new subscribers nearly 25% growth. As reported by the article, this accounts for only 58% of the market at the end of 2006. That puts the Philippines mobile market at close to fourty-five (45) million subscribers.
