More Details on the Google Phone?

VentureBeat has this scoop on some fabled Google Phone features. Here is the list and some of my comments.

  • Blackberry-like, slick device. Slick and slim devices seem to be the rave nowadays. The RAZR saved Motorola and Samsung is coming out with a lot of these types of phones. The Samsung phone with all the Google Applications is also a slick and slim one.
  • C++ core w/ OS bootstrap. This makes sense to keep the phone as simple and non-resource hungry as possible. Then focus on running applications on top of a run-time like Java. Also performance is more tightly coupled to hardware and flexible is provided by a virtual machine.
  • Optimized Java running on the C++ core. Related to the statement above. This seems to be simplest way to release a platform with support for a good number of applications in the market already without compromising performance. Of course, this has to be close enough to the hardware to provide all functionality with great performance.
  • Vector-based presentation courtesy of Skia’s technology. This is probably just a feature to differentiate it from other platforms. However, this can be the default content viewer. Vector-based media takes less resources (space and time) than rich media. Deviation from the rich media trend we see in mobiles now?
  • Many services, including VoIP. This is potentially disruptive. A data-only device is really where mobile technology is moving towards right now. This also means that this devices does not have to be 3G (WCDMA or CDMA2000) or 2G (GSM or CDMA) mobile. It can actually be a WiMAX or Mesh WiFi device. Oh no!

Looks pretty sketchy for now … But, it is definitely showing Google’s true color. It also looks like in Google’s world of the future … the mobile network operator might have no place.
