Modo de Proceder: Heroic Leadership is a Must Read!
The Jesuit Modo de Proceder (Way of Proceeding) is summarized by Chris Lowney in his book Heroic Leadership into four main components.
- Self-awareness. It says in order to successful in any endeavor one must know oneself first. It is important that one know ones goals, principles, capabilities and weakness. A venerable SWOT session on the self that is constantly renewed. Definitely, self-awareness is mandatory grounding and internal moral compass.
- Ingenuity. After knowing oneself and ones anchors, it then important to be adaptable. The ability to adjust to ones environment effectively is critical is this fast changing world. The key is effectivity adaptability.
- Love. I found this strange at first to. However, after reading the book, it makes sense after all. The loving attitude refers to being able to effectively invole the entire team and ecosystem of players. In today’s corporate environment, we hear this too. We do not normally hear the word love. Normally, we hear loyalty, team spirit and synergy. Just to name a few. However, love denotes a greater level of involvement than the rest.
- Heroism. This is what is described in great detail throughout the book. It is best described by the another quotable quot attributed to the Jesuits: work as if success depended on your own efforts - but trust if all depended on God.
Overall, this is a very inspiring book and entertaining as well. The stories of Jesuit challenges in their long nearly five century existence. I have wanted to read this book since it was first released. Being educated in a Jesuit institution, I thought I knew a lot about them already. However, this book has a lot more to offer. Definitely a good read.
