Barry, the Blackberry Sync Tool, Built for Fedora 9

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

The project called Barry is pretty vital to me as a BB user. Unfortunately, it does not have Fedora 9 binaries yet and does not build nicely too. So, I took the liberty of building them.
Here they are for download:

Upgrading to Fedora 8 on a Dell Latitude D510

Saturday, December 8th, 2007

I expected my upgrade to Fedora 8 to be as flawless as my upgrade to Fedora 7. Oh. But, I was mildly disappointed. The upgrade itself was fine but there were a number of issues that you might encounter along the way too. Here are my notes that should help you in your upgrade or […]

Netbeans 5.5 Blank Screen under Fedora Core 6

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

After a few months of not doing any Java code at all, I left my netbeans installation to atrophy while I did most of my work in good ole vi. After upgrading to Fedora Core 6, I tried to run my netbeans again to try out the Findbugs Netbeans plug-in. Unfortunately, I cannot get netbeans […]

VMWare Paravirtualization to be Added to Mainstream Linux Kernel

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Everybody has been hearing about virtualization and its benefits such as consolidation and security. However, virtualization without the participation of the host kernel (called full virtualization) has a lot of performance problems. Hence, the creation of para-virtualzation. This form of virtualization allows the virtualization software (also called a hypervisor) to access the host kernel to […]

Second Life is one of the fastest growing online communities in the Internet today. It is growing so fast that it might have to build data center resources rivaling Google. They are not quite there yet but they are definitely on their way. Here is an article on What Power’s Second Life.

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

I found this interesting piece from OSDir about “Why Microsoft should acquire Linux?”. Actually, to be clear, it is actually a piece about why Microsoft should buy a major Linux distribution such as RedHat or Novell.

Alright, I’m going to say this. I think Microsoft should acquire Linux. Now, I understand that Linux is not as […]

Open Document Format Wins Round One

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

Some people may say that this move by Microsoft to release an ODF converter is definitely in line with their embrace and extend tactics. They go further to claim that this should not be considered a win for Open Document Format (ODF) supporters. Here is a scoop from Ars Technica.
Microsoft today released the final version […]

One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) in Manila

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

I was fortunate enough to get a few hours of playtime with an OLPC prototype brought here by Sandeep here in Makati City, Metro Manila, Philippines. The unit is surprisingly good looking with a lot of new technological and pedagogical enablers.

The little OLPC device (called XO) looks pretty good on my office desk. To […]
