Chinese Language Support in Fedora Core 5

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006

At the advice of a friend of mind from TrendMicro, it would be best to learn Chinese mandarin by learning the Chinese characters at the same time. Since, similar looking characters have similar meanings. So, I decided to try it by installing 拼音 (pin1yin1) input support for my Fedora Core 5 system. There are a […]

I just did a talk in Bluepoint’s Open for Business conference yesterday. It was held in the Richmond Hotel. Mark Mayo did a presentation entitled “QoS, Computer Telephony and Asterisk”. I did a presentation entitled “Trixbox: Practical Open Source Voice-over-IP“. There were other presentations on large scale MySQL and PHP. Finally, a informative presentation on […]

Mac Geeks Moving to Ubuntu: Should Apple Worry?

Tuesday, July 4th, 2006

I read this interesting article on O’Reilly Radar (via Slashdot) about Apple geeks moving to Ubuntu. I do not find this article surprising because a number of my students thought they were using MacOSX upon seeing Ubuntu on their lab computers on their first day of class. Of course, I simply think that any student […]

Crappy FC5 Update Bug (libecal3 bug)

Thursday, June 8th, 2006

The recent evolution-data-server updates are causing yum to fail during an Fedora Core 5 (FC5) update. This is because evolution-data-server-1.6.1 provides libecal-1.2.so.3 while the upgraded version, evolution-data-server-1.6.2 provides libecal-1.2.so.6. Unfortunately, libecal-1.2.so.3 is required by gnome-panel and a whole gamut of other gnome applications. Therefore, yum refuses to upgrade because it finds that replacing evolution-data-server will […]

The Ubuntu community is built […]

Yum Troubles Finally Fixed!

Saturday, May 27th, 2006

I have been having yum troubles for about a month now. I am unable to install or update packages using yum. This is pretty annoying as I am now totally dependent on yum auto-dependency checking features and third party repositories like livna, dag and atrpms. So, for the past month, I have been installing and […]

Fedora Core 5 in Dell 510

Tuesday, April 4th, 2006

After hacking and tweaking again, it looks like Fedora Core 5 is so much easier to install on a Dell Latitude D510 than the previous incarnation of Fedora Core. It also looks much better to boot. Here is the documentation on the installation process. So far I am like Fedora Core 5 and it seems […]

Top (10) System Janitor Tools

Sunday, March 26th, 2006

In the spirit of an article I read in Linux.com about My sysadmin toolbox (which looks more like a desktop enhancement list), I would like to start my own list of essential systems administration tools. These tools are arranged in no particular order. I omitted things like kernel, less, fileutils, cron, at, coreutils, psutils, modutils, […]
